Fertile, MN — The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons improved to 7-1 on the season with a 79-61 victory over the Win-E-Mac Patriots on Monday night.

As has been the case in most of their matchups, the Falcons’ size advantage played a major role, though Win-E-Mac battled relentlessly in the paint to keep things difficult. The Patriots came out physical and energetic, flying around defensively to deny Fertile-Beltrami easy looks. The Falcons matched that intensity on the other end, focusing heavily on slowing down Win-E-Mac’s top scorer, Joe Courneya. Despite their efforts, Courneya powered his way to 21 first-half points, earning every one of them. A bruising opening half ended with Fertile-Beltrami scoring the final four points to take a 38-33 lead into the break.

After halftime, the Falcons tightened their defensive grip on Courneya, holding him to just eight points the rest of the way. Fertile-Beltrami also capitalized on transition opportunities and converted 64% of their free throws. A pivotal 10-0 run with about 12 minutes remaining created the separation they needed, and as the Patriots began to wear down, the Falcons maintained control the rest of the night, closing out the 79-61 win.

Fertile-Beltrami now turns its attention to a road matchup at Hillsboro/Central Valley on Tuesday, the second contest in a demanding four-game week. Win-E-Mac, now 5-5 after dropping its third straight, will look to regroup Thursday at East Grand Forks.
