On August 18, former Minnesota Governor Al Quie died of natural causes at his home in Wayzata. He was 99.

Known as a moderate Republican, Quie served in the U.S. House of Representatives for southeast Minnesota from 1958 to 1979, then as governor from 1979 to 1983.

Quie’s single term as governor turned rocky amid a deep budget shortfall in the early 1980s, when Democrats controlled the Minnesota Legislature. Amid the bitter divisions of the 1981 and 1982 sessions, he opted not to seek reelection.

Governor Tim Walz issued a statement regarding Quie’s death, highlighting his commitment to bettering the lives of Minnesotans.
