Hillsboro City Public Works Openings Moving in Positive Direction
A positive outlook on the city’s public works department openings highlighted the Hillsboro City Commission’s regular meeting, Monday.
City Auditor, Casey Eggermont, informed the commission that there were about half a dozen applicants for both the superintendent and lineman openings and that the summer public works positions were finalized. Commission President, Levi Reese, says that a change in tactics helped generate a surge of over a dozen total applicants in less than a month.
Reese also gave an update on repairs to the Burro statue in Railroad Park.
The statue has been in need of repairs since it was damaged last fall. In other updates, City Engineer, Steve Swanson, informed the commission that sidewalk improvements near the I-29 overpass would begin in mid-July and take a week or two to complete. The commission also approved concrete and soil testing related to that project.
In other business, the commission opened bids for cleaning services at City Hall and the Main Street Community Center. Alicia’s Cleaning Service, the current servicer, was the lone bid and was accepted. The commission also opened bids for spraying and weed management. The two that submitted bids were Jacobson Brothers Outdoor Services and Carr’s Tree Service. The commission accepted Jacobson Brother’s bid.
Other approved action items included: the designation of The Hillsboro Banner as the city’s official newspaper, an allocation of already approved funds for Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, a gaming authorization for Tap That Bar, a raffle permit for Our Saviors Lutheran Church, and farmers market street closures.
Reese also informed the commission that the city would pursue a 100% reimbursable grant through the Us Department of Homeland Security for security upgrades to various city facilities. The full commission approved the plans to apply for the grant. Other discussion items brought forth by the commissioners included tree and stump removal updates, a review of signage throughout the city, and airport millings. No formal action was taken on these items.
