HILLSBORO, ND—The North Dakota Highway Patrol says an impaired driver was involved in a head-on crash with a Hillsboro school bus Friday morning.  The Patrol’s report says a Hillsboro school bus was going south on Traill County Road 81 when a northbound Chevrolet Monte Carlo crossed the centerline and entered the bus’s lane.  The bus driver tried to avoid the collision by steering right, but the vehicles collided head-on.  There were no students on the bus at the time, as the driver was heading to the first pickup spot.  The bus driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured; the driver of the Monte Carlo was not wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries.  The driver of the Monte Carlo was also arrested for DUI involving drugs, with an additional charge of reckless driving recommended to the North Dakota State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Highway Patrol says this crash is a reminder of the dangers impaired drivers pose to everyone on the road at any time of the day or night, including school buses transporting our children.  Again, no children were on the bus when the crash occurred. The bus driver was driving safely and defensively.
