Mayville State University Audit
MAYVILLE, ND—An audit from the North Dakota State Auditor’s Office found that Mayville State University improperly awarded tuition waivers. And over 50 students were given two waivers that university policy doesn’t allow to be combined. The audit covers a two year period from 2023 to June 2025. Auditors found 53 students received both the Comet Athletic Tuition Waiver and the Cultural Diversity Tuition Waiver. University policy doesn’t allow the two waivers to be combined. The auditors also went over emails and found a lack of understanding in the Mayville State athletics department about waivers and how they should be awarded. There were emails that showed cultural diversity waivers were included in prospective students’ financial aid offers before a student had applied or was approved and the waivers were promised over the amount budgeted. The audit also found that Mayville State could not show that required approval was in place for other waivers and that it did not properly complete or keep employee evaluations. Mayville State has agreed with the auditor’s recommendations and will update its policies and procedures.
