Minnesota DNR Seedling orders open
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources State Forestry Nurseryis now accepting orders for the Spring 2024 seedlings sales. The Minnesota DNR says that there will be approximately 3 million seedlings available for purchase for the spring planting season.
The seedling sale program has been around since 1931 and the Minnesota DNR says that it’s a great opportunity for landowners to reforest their property in order to create wildlife habitat, shelterbelts, or a woodland oasis.
The State Forest Nursery offers 26 species of native bareroot trees and shrubs, but the Minnesota DNR says that seedling selection and availability decreases after the first few weeks of sales.
A minimum order of 500 seedlings is required when purchasing from the State Forest Nursery which is the approximate number of seedlings needed to plant one acre of bare land. Orders can be tailored in increments of 100 for each species.
Prices vary depending on species, with prices as low as $195 per order. Packets are also available for purchase and species can vary from white spruce and red pine seedlings to chokecherry, black cherry, nannyberry , and hackberry.
