Minnesota Law Enforcement Leaders call for special session regarding School Resource Officers

Minnesota law enforcement leaders gathered at the Andover Police Department on Wednesday to call for a change to the wording of the latest Minnesota law that law enforcement thinks would prohibit the use of restraints and holds by school resource officers when dealing with disruptive students.

This new law has resulted in 31 law enforcement offices across the state of Minnesota to pull their school resource officers from schools. Democratic lawmakers have stood firm with the new law with the belief that the law hasn’t changed and that changing it would do nothing.

Republican lawmakers and law enforcement agencies across the state disagree and believe that the new wording of the law would prevent them from dealing with disruptive students and could leave their departments and officers open to lawsuits and charges.

Governor Tim Walz has said that he has no plans to reconvene lawmakers before the next session.
