Minnesota Representative seeking House Majority seat
With the ousting of Kevin McCarthy as the Speaker of the United States House of Representative on Tuesday House Republicans will be looking to fill prominent GOP leadership roles. Some early favorites to take the now vacant Speaker of the House position include Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio and current House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
Scalise has been seen as the most likely candidate to step in as the Speaker of the House but if that were to take place that would then open up a seat as the House Majority Leader. One candidate who has their eyes on the House Majority Leaders Seat is Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District Representative and current Majority Whip Tom Emmer. Who would be the favorite to succeed Scalise.
If elected as the House Majority Leader this would be a historic event for the State of Minnesota. Since the state’s founding in 1858 there has never been a Minnesota Representative in the House Majority or Minority Leader position.
Representative Emmer has held his seat in the United States House of Representative since 2015 when he took the seat that was previously held by Michele Bachmann. Prior to the U.S. House of Representatives Emmer was also a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives representing district 19B from 2005 to 2011. Emmer assumed the House Majority Whip back in January of 2023.
