Minnesota Teen Pregnancy Rate Rises
The 2023 Minnesota Adolescent Sexual Health Report was released and shows that the Minnesota Teen Pregnancy Rate increased by nearly 26% from 2020 to 2021 with the birth rate declining by 3.3%.
Officials are saying that this increase is likely tied to the COVID-19 pandemic which reduced access to condoms and contraception.
Officials also say even with this one-year increase, the teen pregnancy rate among teens aged 15 to 19 years old has declined by 71.2% since 1990, with the teen birth rate decreasing by nearly 76% in that same period. They also say these changes are magnified because there are so few adolescents in this age group who become pregnant and/or give birth.
