MN Sen. Johnson On Warroad & Indian Nicknames
Earlier this year, Minnesota State Senator Mark Johnson spoke on KRJB’s Kaleidoscope program about legislation that would prevent schools from having nicknames such as “Indians” or “Warriors.” At the time, Johnson spoke about a group from Warroad meeting with lawmakers in St. Paul who appeared to soften their stance after learning specifics about Warroad’s connection with the Warriors name. But on Friday’s Kaleidoscope program, the Republican from East Grand Forks said lawmakers are bulling ahead with removing the nickname.
TJ Oshie of the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals, who grew up in Warroad, has written a letter to Minnesota lawmakers asking them to reconsider…adding that he himself is a Native American and “the fact that people are trying to take away the Warrior logo is in (his) opinion a travesty.”
