Muskies to Honour Stars of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s at 75th Homecoming Game Friday September 20 at 3:00 PM
Former Muskie football players, coaches, equipment managers, and officials are invited wear their old
jerseys and jackets to cheer on this year’s team Friday at 3 o’clock when they host Kenora Beaver Brae in
the 75th annual Homecoming game.
The game is a rematch of last year’s Winnipeg High School Football League Championship Game that the
Muskies won 30 – 14 for their 3rd title in the past 4 seasons. The Muskies won their first 2 games of the
season and are tied for first place in the AAA Division of the Winnipeg High School Football League. Kenora has a record of 1 win and a loss.
Four Muskie football legends will be Honorary Game Captains at Homecoming. Dale Ross, Rick Wiedenhoeft, Jack Hedman, and Jeff Treftlin will join the current Muskie team captains at midfield for the opening coin toss 10 minutes prior to the 3 o’clock kickoff. Ross, who was a multisport star at FFHS, quarterbacked the Muskies to their first NorWOSSA title in 1953. Wiedenhoeft, who will represent Muskie players of the 1960’s was an outstanding two way player and kick returner. Hedman was the Head Coach when the Muskies broke a 20 year championship drought in 1973. He started a winning tradition and also coached championship teams in 1975, 1978 and 1979. Ross, Wiedenhoeft and Hedman were long time teachers and athletic directors who volunteered to coach a variety of sports teams at FFHS. Treftlin starred on the championship teams in ’78 and ’79. He played in the Canadian Football League for 8 seasons, was named an Eastern Division All Star in 1986 and won a Grey Cup with Saskatchewan in 1989.
There is a special alumni seating section on the North side of yellow canopy that covers the concession area run by the Touchdown Club. There will be refreshments, snacks, Muskie Discount Cards, 50/50 and gas raffle tickets available. Last year the team celebrated 75 years since football started at FFHS in 1948. The pandemic cancelled the 2020 season, so that makes 2024 the 75th season of Muskie football. At Halftime, all former Muskie players, coaches, officials and equipment managers will be gather to pose for a 75 year team photo. Organizers are expecting another large crowd and encourage fans to arrive early and park in the lot adjacent to tennis courts on the North side of the football field.
After the game everyone is invited to gather in the Fort Frances Legion on Church Street.
