Job Title: Sheriff Deputy Investigator
Department: Sheriff’s Office
Reports to: County Sheriff
Supervises: No Supervisory responsibilities
Normal business hours: This is a full-time county position, working
40 hours/ week. This position is covered by personnel 24/7/365. Shifts are a combination
of days, nights, weekends and holidays. Overtime is possible as needed. Occasional
travel may be required for trainings.

Nature of Work:
The Deputy Sheriff- Investigator provides all of the law enforcement services to the citizens of Norman County
normally provided by the Deputy Sheriff with additional responsibility for managing cases and carrying out criminal
investigations. The Deputy Sheriff – Investigator is responsible for providing protection of life and property which
includes traffic and crime prevention patrol and follow-up investigations on crimes committed or reported. Performs
other related law enforcement activities or orders of the court within the County and elsewhere in the State of
Minnesota, where mutual aid agreements exist. The Deputy Sheriff – Investigator carries out duties of the job in
conformance with federal, state, county, and city laws and ordinances.
Communicates with:
Under general supervision of the Sheriff and Chief Deputy Sheriff performs investigation work and may act as the
Officer in Charge at crime scenes or with respect to work performed on assigned cases.
Internally – Sheriff, Chief Deputy, fellow deputies, dispatch personnel, correctional staff, investigators, county
attorneys, probation staff, court personnel, emergency management personnel, and employees from other county
departments to coordinate law enforcement activities, investigations, emergency response, and public safety services.
Externally – Members of the public, victims, witnesses, community organizations, local, state, and federal law
enforcement agencies, fire and EMS personnel, courts, correctional facilities, attorneys, social service agencies,
schools, healthcare providers, and other public safety partners to exchange information, conduct investigations,
coordinate services, and ensure public safety.

Essential Work Functions:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conducts follow-up investigations and interviews of suspects or witnesses on reported crimes and other
pertinent incidents.
o Investigates criminal activities such as burglaries, thefts, crimes involving vulnerable adults, missing
persons, child abuse & neglect, vehicular homicide, felony stops, homicides, gambling, forgeries,
domestic violence, drug investigation, assaults, Jail security, arson, animal welfare, suicides, game
violations and environmental pollution violations;
o Prepares and executes Search Warrants as needed;
o Operates computer equipment, photographic equipment, surveillance and other equipment as
needed; establishes videotape, photographic evidence of crime scenes and severe personal injury
crashes;
o Processes crime scenes and gathers and preserves important evidence; collects, preserves and
documents crime scene evidence including, but not limited to, print processing, tire casting,

photographs, collections of hair fiber and DNA samples, maintaining chain of custody and proper
evidence gathering procedures;
o Forwards evidence to laboratories for analysis and provides testimony in court regarding the evidence
and how it was obtained and secured;
o Prepares documents and forms including daily activity reports;
o Maintains necessary files and writes clear, concise reports that represent incidents as they occur;
o Interrogates and tape records adult and juvenile suspects of crimes within the confines of State law,
case law and department policy;
o Investigates and interviews drivers and witnesses at motor vehicle crash sites.
o Coordinates investigations with Deputies as needed.

Serves on task forces and assists other local, county, state and federal agencies with investigations and crime
detection; acts as backup for the police force in local jurisdictions.
Patrols all County roads, County State Aid Highways, Township and minimum maintenance roads and public
access roads to preserve the peace and enforce all traffic laws; maintains 24-hour availability by radio,
computer, or telephone, for consultation on major emergencies.
o Enforces motor vehicle and commercial vehicle regulations;
o Responds to calls and assists with motor vehicle crashes on the Interstate and State highways; assists
the State Patrol with problems on State highways and the Interstate;
▪ Administers first aid to victims of accidents, crashes, assaults and other medical problems;
▪ Calls for backup emergency personnel (fire, ambulance, police, air care) when needed;
▪ Locates and secures safe landing zone for air care at crashes and other life-threatening
incidents;

o Responds and assists with driving complaints and any other calls for service on the Interstate and
State highways; facilitates solutions for helping citizens obtain tow trucks, directions, and explanation
of laws, rules, and ordinances;
o Apprehends and arrests, with reasonable force if necessary, persons involved in criminal activity;
pursues and apprehends fleeing suspects on foot or in motor vehicles at high rates of speed in
accordance with statues and department policy;
o Responds to emergency calls, sometimes at high rates of speed, under varying road, weather and
traffic conditions;
o Detects and arrests alcohol and drug-impaired drivers; communicates with and de-escalates incidents
involving drug, alcohol and mentally impaired persons; calibrates and operates Preliminary Breath
Test machines;
o Responds to investigate residential and commercial building alarms;
o Responds to assist or advise correctional officers in the jail with out of control or defiant inmates;
o Responds to reports of domestic disputes, assaults, missing persons, runaways, suspicious persons or
vehicles and persons with gun calls;
o Responds to public nuisance complaints such as barking dogs, loud music, juvenile drinking parties,
fireworks, animals at large, etc;

o Performs ATV and snowmobile patrol as needed.

Performs administrative and non-emergency police duties.
o Conducts transfers of prisoners from other jurisdictions to the County for prosecution and mentally ill
prisoners to correctional agencies;
o Prepares evidence, ships it to laboratory for testing as needed and provides results to attorneys and
court as required;
o Provides security at courthouse and courtrooms;
o Assists County Human Services with child protection and welfare fraud issues;
o Testifies in Court of Law as arresting officer in criminal and civil matters whenever needed; consults with
prosecuting attorneys and investigators regarding cases;
o Prepares necessary reports, logs and other forms and correspondence as required;
o Serves civil and criminal complaints, executes summons, subpoenas, complaints, warrants and
protection orders; arrests and transports criminals on outstanding warrants.
Attends required training classes and completes qualifications necessary to maintain POST license and other
required certifications.
o Maintains a current certification in the following areas: as a First Responder, pursuit driving, all
firearms including less-lethal, use of force and other specialized certifications;
o Maintains knowledge and proficiency operating on state computer and related websites;
o Maintains continual training for an active P.O.S.T. license;
o Maintains firearms proficiency with duty weapon, off-duty weapon, rifle, shotgun, less-lethal shotgun,
Taser and attends mandated qualifications on a yearly basis;
o Maintains a professional appearance and code of conduct in accordance with department policy.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience:
Must be currently licensed by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (POST) at the time
of employment.
Successful completion of a Law Enforcement Skills Field Training Program
Five years previous law enforcement experience
Must be able to pass a background check.
Valid driver’s license.
Participate in ongoing training and maintain certifications required to perform law enforcement duties.
