North Dakota Primary Seat Belt Law goes into effect August 1
Beginning on August 1 2023 the State of North Dakota will be moving from a secondary to a primary seat belt law. This means that law enforcement can now stop and issue a seat belt citation to someone for not wearing a seatbelt. In the past law enforcement officers could only give out seat belt citations to drivers who were pulled over for a different infraction.
The new seat belt law states that all occupants in a vehicle must be buckled in regardless of their age and all children under the age of eight must ride in a car seat or booster seat. Governor Doug Burgum signed it into law after it was approved by the North Dakota Legislature earlier this year.
