North Dakota’s Governor Vetos Two Bills
BISMARCK, ND—
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has been using his veto pen. The Governor vetoed a bill concerning pronoun use in schools. The bill would have prohibited schools from referring to students and staff by any pronouns that don’t match their sex assigned at birth. In a letter to the North Dakota Senate President, Burgum said the bill infringes on local control of schools and injects the state into issues most appropriately handled at the local level.
Governor Burgum also vetoed a bill that would have raised the speed limit to 80 miles an hour on Interstates 29 and 94. He cited North Dakota’s “Vision Zero” initiative to reduce traffic deaths as his reason for vetoing the bill.
