Paqui pulls One Chip Challenge off shelves
The chip manufacturer Paqui announced that they will be pulling their very popular “One Chip Challenge” product off of shelves after a teenager Massachusetts consumed the chip and died on September 1. The cause of death of the teen has not been released but some think that the “One Chip Challenge” could’ve been a factor.
In their September 6 press release Paqui said that “although the chip has clear and prominent labeling highlighting the chip is not for children or anyone sensitive to spicy foods or who has food allergies, is pregnant or has underlying health conditions,” they’ve seen an increase in teens and others not heeding the warnings.
The “One Chip Challenge” is a viral trend involving a tortilla chip that’s seasoned with some of the world’s spiciest peppers including the Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper Pepper . This ban comes a day after a Fergus Falls student required medical attention after they had attempted the “One Chip Challenge” and experienced breathing problems. The student was evaluated and it was decided the ambulance wasn’t needed.
