Polk County looking to stop the spread of invasive species

May 19, 2025 News -- KRJB-KRJM-KKCQ 0

After having Zebra Mussels confirmed in Union Lake for the first time last year,  Polk County is looking to stop the spread of the invasive species to other Polk County lakes. Jacob Snyder of the Polk County Aquatic Invasive Species taskforce gives us an update on Union Lake, and the effects that Zebra Mussels have had on it.

The Polk County Aquatic Invasive Species taskforce will be doing what they can to stop the spread of invasive species, but Snyder says it’s ultimately up to visitors to do their part in stopping the spread. Snyder says you can do this by making sure you clean, drain, and dry your watercraft.

Snyder says it’s not just zebra mussels that you have to be aware of, as there’s different kinds of invasive species that can be just as harmful.

More information on aquatic invasive species can be seen on the Minnesota DNR website at www.dnr.state.mn.us.
