Severe Weather Awareness Week: Thursday
There will be two tornado drills in Minnesota Thursday as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week. Jim Kaiser of the National Weather Service in Grand Forks tells us when the drills will take place.
Kaiser gives this advice on what to do if you’re inside a store when a tornado warning is issued.
Kaiser says if you’re at home when a tornado warning is issued, get into the lowest floor of your residence.
You can also cover your head with a bicycle or motorcycle helmet…and kids can use bicycle, hockey or football helmets for protection.
Tornadoes, of course, can be deadly. In Joplin, Missouri in May 2011, 161 people were killed by an EF-5 tornado and a third of the city was destroyed.
Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota wraps up Friday by talking about extreme heat.
