Voyageurs Basketball split Wednesday Night vs Mesabi Range

On Wednesday, January 28th the MN North College-Rainy River Voyageurs hosted MN North College-Mesabi Range in a doubleheader that began with the women’s teams. They would run into a tough loss to the visiting Norse giving up a total of 28 turnovers, and a 4th quarter only scoring 2 points, leading to a 91-39 loss. Officiating also got the better of Rainy River as the team had 16 team fouls to Mesabi’s 7.
Freshman guard EllaGrace Kellerby was a sharpshooter despite the loss, recording 19 points and draining six 3-pointers. Marissa Mills posted a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. The Voyageurs Women’s team drop to 2-15 (0-5 in conference).
In the Men’s game it was a different tale. The Voyageurs would get revenge for the season opener loss that Mesabi Range handed them by beating the Norse in conference play 73-65. Defenses were strong in the first half with the score only being 30-19 in favor of Rainy River.
Things would fire up in the second half with Rodney Mozard leading the charge scoring 14 of his 16 points in the second. He would also grab 14 boards to record a double-double as Austin Howe scored 14, and Jaymar Previl would drop 13 points coming off the bench.
The second half also saw large contributors like starter Talib Mott who shot a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line and scored 9 points. Sophomores Zayviar Handson and Carter Smith stood out in the second half as Zayviar grabbed 8 boards in all in the second half, and Carter scored 7 points off the bench.
Rainy River will return home Saturday, January 31st for another Conference matchup hosting MN North-Itasca in a doubleheader. Game one between with women’s teams is at 1pm with the men’s teams playing after at 3pm.
