Waubun Hit & Run
A woman is hospitalized and a man was arrested after a hit and run accident Sunday night outside of Waubun. The Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office tells R&J News officers responded to a reported hit and run at the intersection of Highways 59 and 113 around 8:30 Sunday night. When officers arrived, there was no victim or suspect vehicle. Witnesses say they heard a woman screaming and saw a black SUV keep going south on 59. Bystanders took 27-year-old Rainey Midbo of Lengby to Mahnomen Health Center; she was later airlifted to Fargo with serious injuries.
Meanwhile, a Becker County Deputy found the suspect vehicle on Highway 59 and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle had front end damage and a headlight out. The driver, 35-year-old Spence Bilden of Grand Rapids, was asked if he knew why his vehicle was damaged. Bilden responded he hit a deer by the gas station in Waubun. The deputy noticed the smell of alcohol and signs of impairment when speaking to Bilden. Bilden took field sobriety tests, which indicated he was under the influence of alcohol. A preliminary breath test showed his blood alcohol level was .033. Bilden was arrested for criminal vehicular operation and leaving the scene of an accident.
