May 1 is Heat Stroke Prevention Day.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Association says children suffering from heat stroke in cars is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related fatalities for kids 14 and younger.  Laura Dunn is a highway safety specialist wit the NHTSA.

We usually hear of a death or serious injury to a child from heat stroke in the heat of summer.  But Dunn says temperatures don’t have to be in the 90s for a child to suffer heat stroke in a car.

And it doesn’t take a long time for your vehicle to get too hot for a child to handle.

There are stories about a parent forgetting there’s a child in their vehicle on a hot day.  Dunn tells us how this can happen.
