The City of Vergas held their annual Maple Syrup Festival this past weekend, and people from all across the region flocked to the city, for all things maple syrup related. Vergas Mayor Julie Bruhn and Lions Club Service Chair Janelle Lotzer say the festival acts as their unofficial kick off to spring.

One of the main events of the festival is the Maple Syrup Producers Contest, and contest judge Kelly Shannon explains what they look for when judging the maple syrup.

A record high 32 entries entered this year’s maple syrup contest, and locals Tom & Natalie Franklin came away with the victory this year. R&J News had the chance to catch up with Tom after the competition, and he talks about his family’s long history of producing maple syrup, and his reaction to being this year’s winner.
