10,000+ year old mammoth tusk discovered in North Dakota
Officials have confirmed that a team of coal miners from the Freedom Mine near Beulah North Dakota have discovered a 10,000+ year old mammoth tusk. The tusk was originally discovered back on Memorial Day weekend and is over seven feet in length.
After the discovery of the tusk a team of paleontologists from the North Dakota Geological Survey later spent 12 days excavating an old streambed and later found 20 other bones including an animal’s ribs, shoulder blade, tooth and parts of the hip. Experts will continue to work on identifying these other remains.
The North Dakota Geological Survey and Freedom Mine are working on a plan to use the tusk and bones for educational purposes.
