(Aitkin, MN) — The Aitkin County Board of Commissioners held their first official meeting in the month of March on Tuesday with a public hearing on Chronic Wasting Disease/Captive Cervid Farms establishing a public hearing for Redistricting of Commissioner Districts.

During the Public Comment Period, Chris Lubinus of Ed Shaw Law representing Garrion Disposal lobbied for the Zoning Ordinance Amendment of adding a third classification of “Solid Waste Transfer Station” and the environmental impacts related to it.

The resolution of adding a third classification was approved later in the meeting by Commissioners. Janet Smude from the Soil and Water Conservation District presented to the Board the Mississippi River Grand Rapids 1W1P Process and allow staff to apply for Plan funds.

The resolution was approved by Commissioners as well as the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) Grants Program to use funds for additional security cameras on the Government Center grounds.

Auditor Kirk Peysar spoke to the Board on establishing options for a public hearing for the redistricting Commissioner Districts in the next 6 weeks.

The Preliminary Plans for the Redistricting of Commissioner Districts is set for March 22nd with the Public Hearing on April 12th.  The Public Hearing for the CWD/Captive Cervid Farms would amend the Aitkin County Zoning Ordinance to eliminate all captive cervid (deer) farms with Environmental Services Director Andrew Carlstrom.

An interim ordinance halting any new captive cervid farms in Aitkin County and calling upon the Minnesota Legislature to enact legislation prohibiting new captive cervid farms in the state.

The Board gave approval for an LG220 Permit-Wealthwood Rod & Gun Club, and resolutions of Establishing Precincts & Polling Places for Unorganized Townships, a Sponsorship to MCIT, and donations to Aitkin County Search & Rescue from the Palisade Fire Department and the Aitkin Lions.

The Aitkin County Board of Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, March 22nd at 9am.
