Minnesota — With Avian Influenza, or the bird flu, being confirmed in three counties in southern Minnesota, the state of Minnesota and federal emergency response teams are working quickly to quarantine and eliminate infected flocks. It’s a big concern for Minnesota turkey producers, who lead the nation in turkey production. However, it shouldn’t be of big concern for Minnesota consumers, according to Dr. Dale Lauer of the Minnesota Department of Animal Health. Dr. Lauer indicates that avian influenza is not transmissible to humans.

Dr. Lauer also stated that is of very low risk of any of the infected birds making it into the food supply.

As of Monday morning, avian influenza has been confirmed in Stearns, Meeker, and Mower counties. Learn more about avian influenza today with Dr. Dale Lauer on the R & J Agricultural Corner program at 3pm.
