Borderland Mustangs Weekend Duals and Jaycees State
The Mustangs Wrestling Club were in Deer River Saturday, April 5th. In addition to the Mustangs and Deer River teams, Blackduck, Northland (Remer), Hibbing, and Nashwauk were also present, with Hibbing and Nashwauk joining up to form a team together. In total, five teams competed. The weight classes for this dual were based on the NYWA weight classes. The following Mustangs filled the following weight classes:
- 45 – Dominic Nordrum
- 50 – Kacen Holmstead
- 55 – Clayton Rasmussen
- 60 – Theodore Nordrum
- 65 – Cass Junker
- 70 – Waylon Rasmussen
- 75 – Abel Pearson
- 80 – Emerson Mannausau
- 84 – Open
- 88 – Open
- 93 – Open
- 102 – Aaron Freeberg
- 115 – Coda Pearson
- 130 – Open
- HWT (215 max) – Open.
Overall, the Mustangs did well. Despite open weights, the Mustangs were able to beat the Northland (Remer) team. When considering wrestlers vs. wrestlers, and not the open weights, the Mustangs held their own, with Coach Ben reporting they placed 3rd. In speaking with a Blackduck coach, he reported the Mustangs fell to them by one point. It was a similar outcome against Hibbing/Nashwauk. The dual wasn’t so much about which team placed higher than the others than it was about introducing some of the wrestlers and their families to what team duals are all about, as they become more prevalent in Junior High and High School wrestling.
Some quick recaps on the wrestlers: Kacen, Abel, Emerson, Clayton, Waylon, Dominic, Cass, Coda, and Aaron all got at least one pin, with Aaron and Theodore also adding in at least one tech fall each for their win totals.
The Jaycees State Tournament is held Friday and Saturday April 11-12 in Grand Rapids, 5th-8th Grade wrestle on Friday with Pre-K through 4th Grade wrestling on Saturday, and the Mustangs will be in attendance. Let’s wish them luck as they compete for Jaycees State in their final Folkstyle Wrestling tournament of the season. Let’s finish the season strong, Go Mustangs!
