Clay County honors two men for heroic actions
At the Clay County Clay County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday the County honored the heroic actions of Travis and Hunter Owens for stopping to render aid to a male that was involved in a crash on October 8.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says that on October 8 a semi truck was traveling southbound, when its driver Jace Kelly had fallen asleep while driving, due to a long shift working the sugar beet harvest. As a result of Kelly falling asleep, he side swiped a semi-truck and after leaving the roadway with a fully loaded trailer the semi-truck violently struck a tree, causing it to immediately catch fire.
After the crash authorities learned that Travis Owens, and his 19-year-old son, Hunter, observed the crash and pulled Kelly from the semi-truck. After moving him to a safe location Hunter assisted his father by retrieving a knife to defeat the seatbelt, while also calling 911 to report the crash.
Shortly after Sergeant Kyle Diekmann nominated them both for the Citizen Citation for Distinguished Service and they received the honor on Monday.
