Clearwater County Sheriff Comments on Proposed Gun Storage Legislation
Bagley, MN — Clearwater County Sheriff Darin Halverson is leading an effort with other County Sheriff’s to speak out against a proposed piece of legislation that he says is unenforceable and a violation of 2nd Amendment rights. He joined the KKCQ Food for Thought Program this week to discuss HF396, which would require gun owners to store all firearms unloaded with a locking device and separately from its ammunition. It would also require those who transfer a gun to another person to do so with it equipped with a locking device.
Sheriff Halverson says this proposed legislation, which is being authored by mostly metro-area Democrats, is an example of government overreach and completely unnecessary, as there is already laws in place that address negligent storage of firearms.
One of the unintended consequences of this proposed legislation, according to Sheriff Halverson, is that it limits law abiding citizen’s ability to protect their homes and themselves.
Halverson also adds that anytime there is a mass shooting, the knee jerk reaction is to make more gun laws. In reality, he feels that the emphasis needs to be placed on the root of the issue, which is mental illness.
