Region 2A Volleyball Tournament – Grafton vs Devils Lake

Grafton 3, Devils Lake 2 (17-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-20, 20-18)

Grafton rallied from a 2 sets to none deficit to take Devils Lake to a 5th set and then win that final set 20-18 Monday in the Region 2A volleyball semifinals at Mayville State University.

The Devils Lake Firebirds started well and took the opening set 25-17.  In set 2, DL was ahead 10-8 before going on a 8-2 run to take command of the second set 25-13.

The third set was tied at 15 before Grafton spoiled Devils Lake’s hopes of a sweep, taking the third set 25-19.  Set 4 started off 5-5 before Grafton went on a 14-5 run to go ahead 19-10.  The Firebirds fought back before back to back kills by Grafton’s Mae Thompson gave the Spoilers the set 25-20 and force a deciding fifth set.

It takes 15 points to win a fifth set, but you have to win by 2 points.  DL had 2 match points, but Grafton held them off to tie the set at 14.  It was tied at 18 before Grafton’s Julia Heidt tipped a kill to put the Spoilers in front, and on the next point Alexis Thompson had a kill off the block to win the match 20-18.

Elle Schumacher led Grafton (19-13) with 14 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks.  Mae Thompson added 20 kills and 2 blocks for the Spoilers.

Emma Hofstad led Devils Lake (15-13) with 11 kills, 2 blocks and 6 aces.

Grafton will face MayPort-CG in the Region 2A semifinals Tuesday night at Mayville State.
