Fake GeekSquad E-Mail Leads to $30,000 Scam in Polk County
Fosston, MN — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is warning community members about scammers once again after a resident was duped out of nearly $30,000 recently. Polk County Sheriff Investigator Justin Swan joined the KKCQ Food for Thought Program recently to discuss the incident. In this particular case, Investigator Swan says they tricked the victim into thinking they were being refunded a subscription to Geek Squad, and then from there took control of their computers and got access to their financials, including a Health Savings Account.
A common theme with most scams, which was also the case in this one, is that often times they act like they paid you too much money and need you to send them money in return.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office encourages community members to be skeptical when receiving calls from people asking for or demanding money, and if it seems suspect it probably is.
