Fosston and Clearbrook-Gonvick Elementary Students Are Masters of Math

The Math Masters mathematics competition program challenges 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Students compete as individuals and on teams in eight rounds of competition held in April each year. Competitions consist of Fact Drill, Individual Rounds and Team Competition. Magelssen Elementary’s 6th grade Math Masters team took home first place at the competition in Bemidji in April. Jonathan Halburg is a 6th grade teacher at Magelssen Elementary School in Fosston. This is his 7th year coaching the Math Masters program. He talks about the students who competed in Math Masters this year and the strong showing they had at the competition.

Halbur gives us an example of a Math problem the kids might have to solve at the competition.


Math Masters is new to the Clearbrook-Gonvick school this year and the kids found success their first time competing, placing 4th, 7th and 12th individually. They are coached by Mrs. Bagaason and Mrs. Anderson. 5th graders T.J. and Wyatt comment on the challenging competition.


There were 150 students representing schools from across the region at the 2022 Math Masters competition that was held in April in Bemidji.
