The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating Comforting Angels Homecare out of Hawley for alleged maltreatment and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults under their care. In the two complaints made to the Department of health the owner of the Comforting Angels Homecare is accused of withdrawing money from their clients bank account for personal use.

The first investigation into the first claim found that around 35 withdrawals over a 16 month period had been withdrawn from the clients bank account totaling $135,543.26. The Department of Health found that the statements sent to them by the owner of Comforting Angels did not match the statements they provided to the client’s power of attorney.

The second claim made against Comforting Angels found that the owner withdrew $246,726.70 from the clients bank account over a nine month period while unauthorized purchases were also used on the clients debit card. Staff members also stated that many times there was not a caregiver on site even though the client was supposed to be receiving 24 hour care. Staff also reported that caregivers would sometimes not show up and that the owner received claims that staff members were using the clients debit card for unauthorized personal transactions.
