Hawley Voters to Decide Fate of $53 Middle School Referendum Today

Hawley, MN — Voters in the Hawley School District today will decide the fate of a $53 million Middle School Referendum along with another $3 million in athletic complex updates. The referendum is intended to help address growing pains in the Hawley community as the district, which is already lacking space, is projected to increase enrollment by 22% within the next decade, according to Hawley High School Principal Kelly Anderson.

The biggest challenge facing the approval of this Middle School Referendum is the tax increase for district voters. The estimated property tax increase for a home valued at $180,000 would be $508.43 per year if both questions are approved. Hawley Superintendent Phil Jensen says he’s hoping for the best but is unsure one way or the other if voters will approve the referendum.

We’ll have results from the referendum during live election coverage tonight starting at 8pm.
