House committee discusses ranked voting option in local elections
The Minnesota House State and Local Government Finance and Policy Committee met on Tuesday to discuss a bill that would make ranked choice voting an option for all local governments across Minnesota. Bill author Representative Cedrick Frazier (DFL, 43A) was the first to testify and he tells us how his bill would work and why he thinks it should pass.
Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon also testified and voiced his support for the bill.
Not all voiced their support for the bill. David Clark of Residents for Bettering Bloomington, a non profit raising awareness for local government claims that ranked choice voting would have an opposite effect on elections.
After hearing a wide range of testimony the House State and Local Government Finance and Policy Committee referred HF 3276 to the House Ways and Means Committee by a vote of 7 to 6.
