Mahnomen, MN — The Mahnomen City Council held their regular monthly meeting on Monday night, March 7th. As part of the meeting, the council held a public hearing about the proposed Streetscape project. Mahnomen City Administrator Kari Kirschbaum says they are seeking $600,000 from the Small Cities Development Program to refresh and renovate the sidewalks and landscaping in the rundown downtown area.

Altogether, the City of Mahnomen intends to invest more than $1.5 million in sidewalk and street improvements in 2023. The council did approve to move forward with applying for the grant.

The Mahnomen City Council also approved a resolution to refinance their 2019-2023 CIP Project bond, which Kirschbaum says would save them a few hundred thousand dollars in the long term by acting now.

An “electric” new project be coming to the Mahnomen Industrial Park in the future. Administrator Kirschbaum says the council discussed an opportunity to invest into a solar farm.

The city of Mahnomen is in the process of expanding water and sewer to the Community Co Op store along Highway 59 and 200 and annexing them into the city, but Kirshbaum adds that they are also hoping to continue to expand those water and sewer lines to south to connect with their industrial park.

The next Mahnomen City Council meeting is scheduled for March 21st.
