Mahnomen County Administrator Explains Closure of Motor Vehicle Services & Future of Department

Mahnomen, MN — At the end of July, Mahnomen County announced that it was shutting down their motor vehicle services offices due to staffing. The department is staffed by only one individual and that individual has resigned. However, Mahnomen County Administrator CJ Holl says the closure is only temporary as the county is committed to hiring another individual and maintaining that service to the community.

A reopening date for Mahnomen County Motor Vehicle Services wasn’t provided. Holl notes that even once a person in hired, it will take some significant time to get that person adequately trained.

Despite Mahnomen County spending more than it takes in to have the Motor Vehicle Services office open, between $20,000 and $25,000 a year, the county commission believes it’s a valuable service to be able to provide to the community. Holl dives more into how the office generates revenue from the service.

In the meantime while the office is closed, Holl notes that many of the motor vehicle services can be done online or via mail, or they can visit one of the other nearby offices such as in Ada or Detroit Lakes.
