Mahnomen, MN — In just a couple months, residents in Mahnomen County will no longer be able to access the Mahnomen County Landfill. The landfill, which is located in the southwest corner of the county, is set to close for good on August 31st. Mahnomen County Administrator CJ Holl says their permit to operate the landfill is expiring and the requirements to operate under a new permit are too costly for the county.

To the west in Norman County, they will soon be facing some similar challenges. Their permit does not expire until 2029, but Norman County Environmental Services Director Garry Johanson says they are being proactive in planning their next steps so that they can find a way to continue to operate theirs in the future.

The Norman County Demolition Landfill is located west of Gary.
