Mahnomen School Board Moving Ahead with New Facilities Plan Using Reserve Funds

Mahnomen, MN — The Mahnomen School Board is planning to move forward with a number of facility updates despite the failure of their facilities referendum earlier this year. A $4.5 million referendum failed via a tie vote in February, but that referendum was only a portion of the $16.7 million facilities project that was originally planned. The district has roughly $12 million in reserves that was set aside for renovations and updates and now the school board is planning to continue on with a new facility update plan, but Mahnomen Superintendent Jeff Bisek says they’ll have to trim it down without that additional $4.5 million.

To decide which projects would have priority in the new plan, Superintendent Bisek says they surveyed staff members and at this week’s meeting, the Mahnomen School Board approved a new plan and budget to move forward with.

Also at this week’s Mahnomen School Board meeting, the board approved purchasing a new van from the state fleet. Bisek says getting new vehicles is a challenge these days.

The board also approved hiring a special education instructor and set a date of October 19th at 6pm for their Federal Programs public hearing.
