(Aitkin, MN) — One full month into the school year and the transition for drivers sharing the road with school buses has been troublesome as it usually has been in the past. School Bus Stop Arm violations continue to see higher-than-normal numbers with numerous factors of distorted driving and negligence being the most common outliers.

We recently chatted with Aitkin Schools Transportation Coordinator Michelle Alcox-Larson about the average number of stop arm violations that have been rising in her years of work with the District.

Penalties for driving around a stopped school bus do carry a hefty price under certain circumstances.

Larson did also give the procedure as a “heads-up” for drivers that may be following a school bus on their morning or afternoon commute.

Even with the addition of extended stop arms, some drivers are not taking safety as their main priority.

Larson and the Aitkin Bus Garage are more than willing to work with drivers that may be encountering school buses during the day.
