Spring Flooding & Moisture Levels Vary Greatly Throughout Region

Fargo, ND — From one side of the state to the other, North Dakota has been experiencing some very unique and contrasting weather patterns recently. On the eastern side of the state and in the Red River Valley, people have been experiencing spring flooding, but North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network Director Daryl Ritchison says most won’t experience anything worse than minor or moderate flooding this spring.

Out in western and specifically southwestern North Dakota, it’s a different story. Ritchison says that region still hasn’t recovered from last year’s drought.

Thanks to a quick warmup in Mid-march, most of the snow melted relatively early this year, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your soil moisture.

As we are heading into the spring planting season and summer growing season, Ritchison forecasts dryer than average conditions, but not as dry as last year.

So much for an early spring: A significant storm event is now being forecasted for later this week that could bring rain, snow, and wind.
