Voyageurs Softball Fight Hard in Two Losses to Itasca
In Saturday’s softball doubleheader on April 26th, The Rainy River softball team hosted MN North-Itasca in the Voyageurs’s home opener. For game 1 against Itasca, it was a heartbreaker for Rainy River, as they lost the lead late in a 14-12 defeat. The game was tied at 12 in the top of the seventh when Webster grounded out, scoring two runs. The Voyageurs flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs on six hits to take the lead, 12-10. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Anitza Gutierrez following a 7-pitch at-bat that drove in two. Raegan Hansen took the loss going five innings, surrendering nine runs (four earned) on seven hits, striking out three and walking two. Jaylynne Verrier and Anitza Gutierrez each collected two hits, and Anahi Martinez led with two runs batted in, the left fielder went 1-for-3 on the day. Rori Hansen paced the Voyageurs with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing six walks for the game. Jazz Phillips, Hattie Ulrich, Taniya Hamilton, Gutierrez, and Martinez each stole multiple bases, piling up 15 stolen bases for the game.
The Rainy River Voyageurs Softball team lost to Itasca Vikings 4-0 in Saturday’s game 2 as Hattie Ulrich took the loss. The starting pitcher went seven innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking one. Raegan Hansen and Rorie Hansen were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits, and Anitza Gutierrez stole two bases. Rainy River Voyageurs stole four bases in the game. Rainy River Voyageurs were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Anahi Martinez had the most chances in the field with eight.
