Voyageurs Sweep Norse to End Regular Season and Honor Sophomores

The Voyageurs softball team held their final regular season doubleheader at home Monday, May 5th against MNC-Mesabi Range, and the game also served as the Sophomore Day celebration. In game 1, Jazz Phillips collected three hits in three at bats, as Rainy River defeated Mesabi 13-0. Phillips doubled in the third inning, singled in the second inning, and singled in the fourth inning. The Voyageurs scored seven runs in the third inning on the way to victory. Raegan Hansen earned the win, the hurler allowed four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out four and walking three. The Voyageurs tallied 19 hits in the game with Phillips and Hansen each collecting three hits. Kayla Ruiz, Jaylynne Verrier, Hattie Ulrich, Anitza Gutierrez, Hansen, and Anahi Martinez each collected multiple hits, and Martinez stole two bases.

For game 2, Kayla Ruiz collected five hits in five at bats, as Rainy River defeated the Norse 13-8. Ruiz doubled in the fifth and sixth inning, and singled in the first and second inning. The Voyageurs flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on eight hits to take the lead, 13-8. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Castillo that drove in two. Hattie Ulrich earned the win, surrendering 10 hits and eight runs (six earned) over six and one-third innings, striking out five and walking four. Raegan Hansen appeared in relief. Rainy River accumulated 25 hits in the game, and Castillo and Gutierrez each drove in two runs. Verrier, Jazz Phillips, Ulrich, Rorie Hansen, and Anahi Martinez each collected multiple hits with Ruiz, Gutierrez, and Martinez each stealing multiple bases for Rainy River Voyageurs.
