Koochiching County Public Health is bringing an important conversation to local schools and the community next month.
Officer Gomez, a speaker with the Tall Cop program, will visit area schools on May 11th to talk with students about social media risks, peer pressure, and substance use trends.

That same evening, the community is invited to a free presentation at Backus Community Center at 7 p.m., aimed at helping parents and residents better understand the risks kids face today.

Public Health officials say the goal is to raise awareness and give families tools to start important conversations.

This event is being sponsored by Koochiching county opioid settlement funds.

At last night’s Chamber Awards in International Falls, several local leaders and organizations were recognized for their impact on the community.
The Large Business of the Year honor went to Packaging Corporation of America, a major employer in the region with nearly 600 workers and more than a century of history in the Falls.
Mill Manager Tyson Wimpeck reflected on that legacy:

Leaders say PCA’s impact goes beyond jobs—supporting schools, local programs, and community organizations.
Another award recipient was Zak Manka and the Sports Shop for Small Business of the Year.

The night also recognized the nonprofit work of the Elks Lodge across the region:

The ceremony wrapped with the Citizen of the Year award, celebrating leadership and volunteerism in the Borderland.
