Red Cross Continues Its Quilts For Veterans Project
Starting tomorrow, September 10th the American Red Cross is bringing back it’s Quilts For
Veterans project in partnership with Gate City Bank. During this event which will run from the
10th until November, local quiltmakers are encouraged to donate their quilts to any nearby Gate
City Bank drop off location where the Red Cross will later distribute the quilts to VA hospitals,
homes, and stand-down events across the area.
The drive forms part of the broader mission of the American Red Cross Service to
Armed Forces and the Hero Care Network, which provides emergency communications,
financial assistance referrals, and mental health support to military members, veterans,
and their families. Regionally, the Red Cross provides over 6,000 military services each
year and reaches nearly 3,000 service members through informational briefings.
Some details regarding the condition of any quilts submitted can be seen below:
- Must be new and/or made with new materials
- May be handmade or purchased quilts or fleece blankets
- Preferably 60” X 80” with neutral, masculine or patriotic themes
- Since they will be used in hospital and care facilities, they must be sturdy enough to
undergo industrial washing and sterilizing process with no loose yarns or stringsthat
could catch on medical equipment. - Quilts and blankets will go home with Veterans upon hospital discharge
