DNR reminds boaters safety in cold water

(Minnesota) — With the fluctuating temperatures and waters soon to be ice being thawed for the open water season, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to focus people’s attention to knowing safety in cold water.
Each year, approximately 30% of fatal boating accidents for boaters and paddlers happen during the cold-water period. In many instances, the victims were not wearing a life jacket. The DNR reminds that wearing a life jacket is still the most effective way to survive a fall into cold water.
As boater and paddlers take their first trips of the year onto the water and the DNR as these helpful tips including: Ensure your boat has a registered and equipment with proper safety equipment; Wear a life jacket; Distribute weight evenly and abide by manufacturer’s weight limits to reduce the likelihood of falling overboard; have a means of communication; and watch the weather to avoid shifting winds or storms.
