Anhydrous Ammonia Safety
When the harvest season is finished, many farmers will be applying anhydrous ammonia, or NH3, to their fields. While anhydrous ammonia is an effective fertilizer, it can also be very dangerous. Jane Boerboom, a facilities management unit supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, talks about the dangers of anhydrous ammonia.
Boerboom says you should always wear NH3-rated goggles and gloves—and DON’T wear contact lenses.
he also says you should have access to safe water in case you need to rinse out your eyes or skin that’s been exposed to anhydrous ammonia. There’s more information on anhydrous ammonia safety on the Minnesota Department of Agriculture website.
