Bears Coming Out Of Hibernation

Late March to early April is around the timeframe that bears in hibernation awaken from their wintery slumber. So in preparation of what to look out for, we reached out to Stephanie Horner of our local Vince Schute Bear Sanctuary.

Stephanie lists off “attractants” that are the usual causes for run-ins between bears and humans.

Another attractant that is common to cause bear encounters can be something as small a bird feeder.

Then, there is also being wary of feeding pets outdoors.

Stephanie makes sure to address our local grill masters and the precautions they must also take as they get ready for the warmer weather.

Another season that comes with the warm temperatures are the fruiting trees and gardens producing attractants to bears.

She stresses very much on locking doors and garages because bears can be rather smart.

Stephanie was then asked what folks are recommended to do in the scenario that they have a bear encounter.

So remember to respect our large, furry friends as they wake up from their long naps, and heed the warnings of accidentally attracting bears.
