Minnesota’s northern forests are facing growing threats—and leaders say more funding is urgently needed to protect them.
A new report from the Minnesota DNR highlights widespread damage from wildfires, invasive insects, and severe storms, impacting millions of acres across the state. From the Brimson Complex fires to the spread of emerald ash borer, forest health is under increasing pressure.
Experts say timber harvesting and replanting are key tools to restore and maintain healthy forests—but current funding is falling short. The DNR estimates it needs about 4 million dollars annually for reforestation, but recent budget proposals would provide far less.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are now pushing for an 18 million dollar investment to support long-term forest recovery efforts.
Supporters say without adequate funding, Minnesota risks losing not only critical wildlife habitat—but also the sustainability of its forest industry and natural resources for future generations.

Local voices are shining a light on mental health and aging, as this month’s Aging Matters conversation highlights challenges many older adults face—and the importance of getting help.
Sue and George Fraik say aging can bring a wide range of stressors, from health concerns to loneliness and life changes.

They say when those challenges build up, they can lead to common mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.

One key concern: many people wait years before seeking help, often due to stigma.

But there is good news! Most cases can improve with support, connection, and care.

And if someone is in crisis, help is always available.

The message is to stay connected, speak up, and take care of both your mental and physical health.

The Littlefork-Big Falls School District is reminding families that April is a busy month across the district.
School officials say state testing for students in grades 3 through 11 begins this month, and families are encouraged to check the school website for the full testing schedule. Registration for the 2026-2027 school year will also begin this month in the high school.
Because there was no school yesterday, April 6th, students will attend classes on Friday, April 10th.
And a reminder — prom is set for Saturday, April 25th, with Grand March open to the public from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. in the new gym.
The district also notes that graduation for the Class of 2026 is scheduled for Friday, May 22nd at 7 p.m. in the new gym.
