May Means Mental Health Awareness

As the May flowers bloom from the April showers, so too does Mental Health Awareness bloom into the public eye. With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Allison Meyer from the International Falls location of the Northland Counseling Center joined us to discuss Mental Health and its misconsceptions.
People living with mental health conditions have experienced stigma across many generations, cultures, and societies. Although there is more understanding and acceptance today about mental health conditions, many individuals and communities still hold negative attitudes or beliefs about those living with mental health conditions. But there has been steps in changing that stigma surrounding it.
Northland has been providing mental health and chemical dependency services for our communities since 1959. In 2020, Northland became recognized as a Federally Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) and in 2023, became State Certified. This Certification demonstrates Northland’s dedication to being a person-centered, trauma-informed, and holistic provider of care – to persons of all ages and cultures – experiencing wide ranges of backgrounds and experiences.
When you receive services from NCC, you can expect a full array of services tailored for you by your treatment team. All bound together by care coordinators to assist you in navigating your course towards your best self.
Mental illnesses are common in the United States and around the world. It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness.
Northland will be holding their own special program for the month of May to encourage folks to come by their center.
The International Falls office is located at 1902 Valley Pine Circle, with hours from 7:30am-6pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8am-12pm Fridays.
