Polk County TZD Seat Belt Observations

Polk County TZD Seat Belt Observations

Child Passenger Safety Week may be over, but keeping children safe on the road is important every day of the year.

During Child Passenger Safety Week, the Polk County Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) Coalition conducted seat belt observations at schools throughout Polk County. Coalition members observed vehicles during school arrival to better understand seat belt use and other behaviors that can impact the safety of children traveling to school.

Across all participating schools, 91.5% of observed drivers and passengers were buckled up. While the majority were properly restrained, observers also noted 12 drivers using a cell phone during school drop-off and 78 children under age 13 riding in the front seat.

These observations are not intended as enforcement, but as an opportunity to increase awareness and encourage families to make safe choices on every trip – even the short drive to school.
