FINLEY, N.D. – The Steele County Sheriff’s Department, Hatton Rural Fire District and other regional agencies continue to provide crucial support when possible to area residents during this flood event.

“A Steele County farmstead, which had dike protection, was inundated on Sunday night near Hatton,” said Steele County Sheriff Wayne Beckman. “With the help of some quick and creative thinking from the Hatton Rural Fire crews, and the goodwill of the Northwood Rural Fire District, we were able to bring pumps online in an attempt to help save this family’s home. We owe these agencies a lot of thanks.

“Emergency crews are doing everything they can to help save lives and mitigate property damage,” Beckman continued. “The earlier we know there is a potential problem, the better off everyone will be.”

Beckman said emergency crews have been using a boat to shuttle firemen and other rescue personnel back and forth from the house due to the height of the water surrounding the house and the road.

Several roads in the county remain closed, although Steele County Road 8 north of County Road 23 recently reopened. Beckman stressed that drivers continue to be diligent, monitoring changing road conditions and not attempting to drive through flooded roadways.

Officials also want to remind residents that, with events like flooding, circumstances can change quickly; if residents need assistance, contact the Steele County Sherriff’s Department at (701) 524-2742.
